True Living Water

John 7:37-39

Have you ever been parched to the point where your mouth was so dry your tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth? So parched you could barely open your mouth when a glass of cool fresh water was presented to you to drink? So parched that you might be willing to drink even a contaminated glass of lukewarm water, even if it might later harm you, if it was all that was available?

Jesus entered a world full of people with a condition far worse than a parched mouth. He entered into a world full of people with parched souls. Yet, He came to offer us something far better than a glass of fresh cool water to quench a dry and thirsty mouth. He came to offer us, not a glass, but a stream of Living Water that could quench the driest and thirstiest soul.

Unfortunately, many try to quench their souls with contaminated water. Water that appears to hold promise to meet our deepest needs, such as religion, money, erotic love, fame and the list goes on and on. Men and women throughout the ages have been drinking from these streams not realizing they were further contaminating their souls. The reason for this contamination is that all of these things, if not from God and His truth, harm us rather than help us.

The Living Water that Jesus offers is the Spirit of God Himself, the Spirit of TRUTH. Jesus’ promise is this, if you believe upon me the man of Truth sent by God (cf. Jn. 7:18), then I will send you the Spirit of Truth to live in you and abide with you. The Spirit of Truth will be like streams of Living Water welling up inside of you.

Jesus fulfilled this promise initially on the day of Pentecost to his followers and the apostles. He fulfills this promise to everyone else when they repented of their sins and believed upon Him (cf. Acts 2:38-39). For you were “included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.” Eph. 1:13-14

Only the True Living Water, the Spirit of Truth can satisfy the thirst in our souls, so drink up!
